We are committed to maintaining high standards of teaching and research with excellent facilities and programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

Collaborative and flexible teaching

Undergraduate degrees in SoMaS are taught jointly by the three departments using a flexible modular system. We also offer dual honour degrees with Geography, Astronomy and Philosophy.

The Department also has strong links with the University's Engineering Departments where we provide service teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Vibrant research activity

Our vibrant research activities offer a unique environment for the pursuit and expansion of knowledge. Many of our research groups are nationally and internationally recognised.

The 'Centre for Terrestrial Carbon Dynamics', a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) centre of excellence, is directed by our own Professor Shaun Quegan.
