The Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at the University of Sheffield is one of the largest in the UK devoted to the study of whole organism biology, having 40 academic staff and research fellows.
Top rated research In the Research Assessment Exercise for 2008 we were ranked in 3rd place in the UK (Source: Times Higher Education). We have a large research school, with over 80 research students and 57 postdoctoral researchers, and we publish about 200 research papers per annum.

Flexible Courses We offer nine degree courses based around the core subjects of biology, zoology, plant sciences and ecology. Each offer a wide choice of speacialist modules, including field courses and the option of taking the course as a three year (BSc), or four year (MBiolSci) degree. We also contribute to the Environmental Science degree, run in partnership with the Department of Geography.

Excellence in teaching quality The Quality Assurance Agency for higher education (QAA) reviewed the Department in November 1999 and the outcome was the maximum score of 24 points out of 24 for teaching quality. This means that all aspects of teaching were judged by the QAA to be excellent.
