The Department of Human Communication Sciences is concerned with teaching and research into normal interpersonal communication, communication impairment, and the remediation of communication impairment.

It is an interdisciplinary field that examines the nature and use of speech and language. The core elements of study are psychology and the linguistics sciences, but there are also links with speech and language pathology and education.

Excellence in Research

The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirm the Department's status as a world class centre for the study of Human Communication Sciences with 60% of its research graded in the top 4* (world leading) and 3* (internationally excellent) categories.

Excellence in Learning and Teaching

The most recent external review of teaching focused on our speech and language therapy courses, the BMedSci (Speech Science) and MMedSci (Clinical Communication Studies). The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education awarded our teaching the highest grade possible in all the assessed categories.
