Welcome to the Department of LandscapeThe department is the only landscape school in England with independent departmental status. We offer research and taught courses across the breadth of Landscape Architecture, including design, planning and management.
Top Rated ResearchIn the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise we made the first ever ‘solo’ entry by a Landscape Architecture department. All the Department’s work has been graded ‘international’ in its standard, with three-quarters being rated internationally excellent or outstanding. Previous RAEs have awarded us the coveted Grade 5 rating. We have a buoyant research student community and all staff are highly research active. Our research is intended to be agenda-setting - as well as drawing on ideas and methods from subjects such as geography and ecology, we define new approaches and challenges that help advance the distinctive knowledge base of landscape architecture.Excellent Teaching The Quality Assurance Agency for higher education (QAA) reviewed the department in 1997 and the outcome was an excellent score of 23 points out of 24 for teaching quality. More recent methods for for assessing teaching quality only give verbal feedback and do not return a numerical score. Our latest Independent Evaluation of Teaching in 2006 said "The department has emerged as a leader in its field and has a strong staff team with a breadth of skills, research and teaching specialisms". Most of our courses, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels are accredited by the Landscape Institute. Knowledge Transfer An important part of our activity is 'Knowledge Transfer'. This means using our Know-how to contribute to solutions in the private, public and voluntary sectors, in order to enhance quality of life. We seek to inform the development of products and services by applying the findings of academic research and training.
