Special Collections and Archives
The Special Collections and Archives Department holds some 150 collections of both special collections (printed books, periodicals and pamphlets) and archives (manuscripts, ephemera and mainly unpublished primary materials).
Collections are for reference use within the Western Bank Library by members of the University of Sheffield, and also by non-members of the University by prior arrangement with Special Collections staff (email lib-special@sheffield.ac.uk or telephone (0114) 222-7230). Proof of identity is required in all cases.
For access to Special Collections please see the opening hours shown below. Arrangements to access Archives must in all cases be made in advance with the Head of Special Collections, Jacky Hodgson, who can be contacted at lib-special@sheffield.ac.uk or by direct telephone line on (0114) 222-7230.
Some collections have separate finding aids which may be consulted in the Department, others remain unlisted. Whilst the intention is in due course to list all titles in the Printed Book collections in the Library's online catalogue Star, please note that many older books are as yet entered only in the old 'Card Catalogue' (a microfiche version is available), or in other forms such as typescript lists.

As these hours may have to be changed at times (due to staff attendance at meetings and other duties, illness, or leave, especially in the Summer vacation) readers are advised to check that access is available prior to making a visit.
- Monday to Wednesday: 9:30 to 13:00; 14:00 to 16:30
- Thursday to Friday: Limited access only
On Thursdays and Fridays Archives may be available by prior arrangement with the Special Collections staff: please check in advance that this will be possible as access to archives cannot be guaranteed on Thursdays and Fridays. Items from Special Collections can be applied for on a strictly timetabled basis to the Counter Supervisor at the Western Bank Library Counter (for details please telephone (0114) 222-7202).
